WHAT IS A CELEBRATION OF LIFE?

In this first of two blogs, we are going to answer some common questions regarding the celebration of one's passing. With smart phones and apps, there is much to consider when planning a celebration of life.  Here are a few things to know before you get started.

What is a Celebration of Life?

A celebration of life is a positive and uplifting event that honors the memory of a person who has passed away. Unlike traditional funerals, which may have a more somber tone, a celebration of life focuses on remembering and celebrating the individual's life, accomplishments, and positive contributions. It often emphasizes the joy, love, and meaningful moments the person brought to the lives of others.

Celebrations of life can take various forms, such as gatherings, memorial services, or events at meaningful locations. They may include stories, music, artwork, photos, and other elements that reflect the person's personality and interests. The goal is to create a warm and comforting environment where friends and family can come together to share memories, express their feelings, and celebrate the person's legacy in a way that feels authentic to their life.  

The digital form of a celebration of life is known as a Digital Legacy.

A digital legacy refers to the online presence and digital assets left behind by a person after they pass away. It includes their social media accounts, emails, photos, videos, documents, and other digital content. Planning for a digital legacy involves deciding what should happen to these assets, whether they should be preserved, deleted, or passed on to loved ones.

  1. Social Media Accounts: Provide instructions for handling or memorializing accounts on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.
  2. Personal Documents: Include important documents like wills, letters, and other personal writings that you want to pass on.
  3. Photos and Videos: Compile cherished photos, videos, and albums that represent significant moments in your life.
  4. Blogs and Websites: If you have a personal blog, website, or online portfolio, consider archiving or passing them on.
  5. Emails and Correspondence: Decide whether you want your emails to be accessible or if you'd like specific messages to be shared with loved ones.
  6. Creative Works: Include any creative works you've produced, such as art, music, writing, or other projects.
  7. Personal Stories: Write down anecdotes, life lessons, and personal stories that you want to pass on to future generations.
  8. Memories and Reflections: Record audio or video messages sharing your thoughts, memories, and messages for your loved ones.
  9. Online Accounts: Provide a list of accounts, usernames, and passwords that may be relevant for loved ones to access.
  10. Instructions: Clearly outline your wishes for your digital assets, including whether you want them preserved, deleted, or transferred.

Remember, the content you choose to include in your digital legacy should reflect your values, interests, and the impact you've had on the digital world. It's important to regularly update and review your digital legacy plan to ensure it remains accurate and aligned with your wishes.  And, with today's technology, a digital legacy plays a large role in one's celebration of life.
